ICE: Initial,Change, Equilibrium analysis tables

How can we determine the progress variable?

The ability to determine the extent of reaction using an ICE table is probably the most important skill that you will acquire in the study of the equilibrium constant. It is important to be able to quantify how the concentration of reactants and products once equilibrium is reached. Often we are given the initial concentrations. Then we need to use stoihiometry to determine the ratios in which the reactants will be consumed and the products will be produced.
