Safety Assessment for Hangzhou Physical Chemistry Program, Summer 2016

Housing

The students and faculty in this program will stay at the Zhu Ke Zhen International College Dormitory at the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University.  The building has 24-hour staff at the front desk and a guard office that monitors activities 24 hours a day. The students live in single rooms, which have a private bath. The faculty member is housed in the same building and is within 60 seconds walk from the student accomodations.  During Business Hours the International College staff have offices in the same building and can visited for routine help and advice.

Local Transportation

The classrooms are 10 minutes walk from the student dormitories. Bicycling is also possible. Car access to the campus is restricted so the street between the dormitory and the classroom is not a busy thoroughfare. The campus is a guarded compound and is considered an extremely safe location. Hangzhou has a low crime rate and the campus region is particularly safe. The local area of Hangzhou and Zhejiang Province is considered generally safe. There are no restrictions on student travel with the local area.

Safety in the Research Laboratory

Safety in the research laboratory is a serious matter that will be thoroughly discussed and prepared.  Any potential laboratory will be vetted by the Director to determine whether there is an unnecessary or unacceptable risk to the student.  The Director has extensive contacts in the Chemistry department. At this time the main emphasis will be on computational work which will have minimal hazard. If opportunities for experimental work arise the Director will ensure that students work in established and well-equipped groups who use standard methods common to labs in Europe and the U.S.
